Show Notes:

Hey there fellow Nerds and Geeks!

Thanks for tuning into the Hall H Show!

Aaron Nabus here…and I’m glad San Diego Comic Fest was our first convention of 2017. Two weeks ago, we attended the 5th annual San Diego Comic Fest – a four day event took place from Friday, February 17 to Monday, February 20). All I can say is that I totally had the worst con withdrawal symptoms after my last day there…it was that good!

There were no Hollywood studios and there weren’t any panels hosted by Chris Hardwick…and that is a good thing. I think there is room in San Diego for both types of conventions. Besides, San Diego Comic-Fest had it’s own celebrities…like Jim Valentino, Mark Evanier, Arlen Schumer, Mike Royer and Floyd Norman.

It’s okay to love both the many headed hydra that has become San Diego Comic-Con and also San Diego Comic-Fest, an intimate convention that pays homage to the early days of San Diego Comic-Con, when Jack Kirby was king. In fact…as you’ll learn on this episode…they both share a common thread.

On this San Diego Comic Fest recap episode, I’m also joined by my partner in crime, and HallH.com co-founder Alex Benedicto and writer, producer, filmmaker and HallH.com contributor, Jason Lethert!

So please enjoy our  2 hour recap…which we recorded at Skyline San Diego, a trade show marketing company where one of our contributors, Jason Lethert works…and where I used to work many moons ago…thanks Jason and Skyline San Diego. And now….on to the show! Artists Assemble!

On this episode, we will:

  1. Recap what we each of did each day at San Diego Comic Fest.
  2. Discuss some of our favorite moments and panels we regret missing.
  3. Discuss what we think San Diego Comic Fest can do to improve.
  4. Discuss what we think SD Comic Fest will be like next year.
  5. Do a Quick Thunder Round – our off the beaten path set of questions.
  6. We’ll put a quick Art Watch spot light on some artists that caught our attention online.
  7. Flash Forward and talk about what’s on the horizon for us (Jason reveals a project he will be launching soon!)

About San Diego Comic Fest (from their website):

The San Diego Comic Fest is the friendly comic convention with a casual atmosphere and an intimate scale that allows fans to mingle directly with professionals and exhibitors. It’s the place where you can indulge your love of comics, science fiction, and films, and meet an outstanding array of professional creators without high-priced tickets, crowding, or long lines.

At the San Diego Comic Fest you’ll find an extensive and eclectic program with things for every fan to enjoy. As you would expect of a comic con, there will be panel discussions; guest programs; an artist alley; tabletop gaming; cosplay; steampunk; an exhibitor hall full of your favorite comics, books, toys, and collectibles; and much, much, more. All of this takes place in a relaxed setting that enables fans and professionals to hang out and enjoy good times talking about comics, science fiction, films, animation, and all the other things that fans love.

Comic Fest’s origin story: Back in 1969, when he was a teenage San Diego comics dealer, Mike Towry was part of the small group of fans who founded what became known as the San Diego Comic-Con. After the celebration of the 40th Comic-Con in 2009, he and other Comic-Con veterans agreed that San Diego needed a second convention, one reminiscent of the early Comic-Cons. Thus, San Diego Comic Fest was born in 2012.

Thank…YOU! 🙂

Thank YOU for listening to the Hall H Show! As you can see, we totally dug San Diego Comic Fest and we’re already excited for next year’s show. We’re glad this was the first con of the year for us…and we’re going to continue to get SDCCfit for the long con season ahead.

Also, since our mission is to put the mainstream Hall H spotlight on the pop culture and comic book artists, writers and other creatives…especially emerging talent and ones we think deserve more exposure…please make it a point to visit Artist Alley at all the conventions you plan on going to this year.

If you are listening on iTunes, we would appreciate a rating and a comment. We are always looking for interesting guests to have on the show…so if you have any suggestions, please reach out to us on social media using the hashtag, #HallHshow. Peace…cheers…and Artists Assemble!
