Show Notes:

Hey there Hall H Show listeners!

Aaron Nabus here and on this episode, we’re joined by Peter Murrieta and David Schrader

David is no stranger to the show. We last had him on the podcast back on episode 62 which featured two interviews with him where he talked about his comic book, Baby Badass.

But on this episode, he’s back with Peter, to talk about a new project called, Rafael Garcia: Henchman which will be available to back on Kickstarter starting on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 (and ending on October 7, 2020).

The basic premise is “What if life in a super-villain organization was less like a James Bond movie and more like working at Walmart Corporate?” Sounds like a fun ride, right?

I enjoyed getting to know Peter and catching up with David. We talked about their comic book, how they first met, why latino representation in front and behind the camera is important to Peter, important advice for writers, what their favorite donuts are, what karaoke songs they would sing and more! Enjoy and please check out their Kickstarter campaign!

Kickstarter Campaign Trailer:

A workplace Action-Comedy about an easy going Henchman attempting to take control of his life and survive corporate super villainy.

“This book will speak to fans of The Office, Parks & Rec, Young Justice, and anyone that wonders if Facebook and Tesla may not have our best interests at heart. And, of course, anyone who’s had to sit through management training or a Tony Robbins corporate workshop.” – Starburns Industries Press

Synopsis (from the Kickstarter campaign):

What if life in a super-villain organization was less like a James Bond movie and more like working at Walmart Corporate?

Rafael Garcia: Henchman brings the old familiar tropes of a dark workplace comedy by way of a brand-new cinematic superhero universe. From “Mr. Iglesias” Writer Peter Murrieta and Writer/Filmmaker David Schrader, comes an action comedy that mixes the daily grind of The Office with the slacker absurdity of Stripes — if the General in charge was more like Lex Luthor.

The series is brought to you by lifelong readers of comics with a deep love for the world of superheroes. A love that planted the seed for questions like “Who provides the janitorial services at JLA Headquarters? And do they have a benefits package?”

What Other Creators Are Saying:

Everyone who grew up with Bond movies and super-hero stories has wondered about the private lives and working conditions of those nameless armies who serve supervillains. Now we have the answer, an entertaining comedy from Peter Murrieta and David Schrader.

David Avallone (Drawing Blood, Bettie Page, Doc Savage, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark)

Murrieta and Schrader break a new kind of bad in this hilarious look behind the curtain at the true heroes of super villainy – the henchmen! Rafael Garcia: Henchman is a blast!

Steven Prince (creator/writer of Monster Matador)

A down-on-his-luck minion with a heart of gold. Rafael Garcia: Henchman is like Kevin Smith with a cape.

David Pepose (creator/writer of Spencer & Locke, Going to the Chapel and The O.Z.)

Thunder Round Questions:

  • King Kong or Godzilla?
  • What statement would you have Bart, from the Simpsons, write on the chalkboard?
  • It’s 10pm and you’re starving after a full day of writing. What kind of food would you be craving?
  • If Jack Kirby was still alive, what would you ask him?
  • Spending more time at home during this pandemic has given me the opportunity to watch and read all sorts of things. Anything interesting that you’ve watched or read lately?
  • I was on Peter’s instagram and saw an image about coffee and donuts and working a construction job. What’s your favorite donut? And what was the first job you ever had?
  • If you could teleport to anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why did you pick that place?
  • David…is Ring of Fire still your song of choice at the karaoke bar? What else would you like to sing to close the bar down?
